Soh Hui Ling, 21, has credentials that would make her peers green with envy. She clinched the top student position at SBM during her graduation ceremony in 2017. She received the Distinguished DBS award and Resorts World Sentosa Gold Award. Furthermore, NUS and NTU both offered her places even before she’d graduated.
A graduate from the Diploma in Tourism and Management, she aspires to work in the tourism industry one day. Yet, her achievements go beyond good grades.
It all began during her first part-time job at Manhattan Fish Market, when Hui Ling discovered she had a flair for communicating with people after being awarded the Star Fish recognition award for her excellent customer service.
“I really like to meet people and seeing the smiles on their faces when good service is delivered to them,” she explained.
Being a sociable individual, Hui Ling’s friendly personality is perfect paired with her doing the greater good. She was actively involved in organising and participating in community based activities, such as the various food donation drives organised by NYP’s Leo Club and visiting elderly homes.
“By helping those around me, I’ll feel happy. Most importantly, I believe that one should empathise, encourage and give back to the people in the community, so that all of us can lead a warm and happy life together,” said Hui Ling.
It’s no doubt that behind every successful person is a series of hardships. Hui Ling struggled to manage various project teams with the overwhelming number of assessments each semester.
However, the curriculum, exposure and learning opportunities that SBM had provided, has helped Hui Ling mature into an innovative individual with a can-do spirit. She worked tirelessly towards her goals, and kept her head up high and her heart wide open.
“My definition of success would be being a better ‘you’ each day. If you believe it, you can do it. Because you believe that you can,” she said with a smile.
In the near future, Hui Ling wishes to specialise in marketing and leaning towards the customer service sector in the tourism industry. For now, she will focus on pursuing a degree in Project and Facilities Management at NUS.
