Specialised cocktails, good vibes and décor that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye; what more could one possibly want?

Speakeasy bars, by their very definition, are often unheard of and hard to find. Unlike mainstream bars, they cater to those who desire a fancier and more tasteful experience with their alcohol.

They first came about during the Prohibition era (1920–1933) in the United States, where the sales, manufacturing, and transportation of alcoholic beverages were illegal. Hence, this led to the rise of ‘underground’ establishments for people to enjoy or sell a drink or two without the fear of getting caught.

After 1933, most speakeasies dwindled and only a few remained. Now, the term ‘speakeasy’ is used to describe current underground bars that pay tribute to this era in their own retro-styled personalities. Contrary to popular belief, speakeasies do in fact exist all over the world, including Singapore.

Situated in the heart of the city, Singapore’s speakeasy bars contain a wide array of customized drinks – ranging from a simple gin and tonic at The Spiffy Dapper to an exotic-tasting milo infused bourbon at Ah Sam Cold Drink Store.

Singapore’s speakeasies are without a doubt one of the world’s best contenders in terms of their customized infusions. With most of them being menu-free, patrons get to enchant their taste buds with the bartenders’ renditions of their favourite flavours. All they have to do is state their preferred choice of booze and taste.

So without further ado, here are our top five speakeasy bars for you to give it a shot. Literally.
