Joanna Wong and Darien Tan have carved a living out of their hobby of baking through the Web

Having an online business has dozens of benefits. CATCH got in touch with Joanna Wong and Darien Tan, owners of an online bakery, to find out more about their experience.
Their business, named Addictive Bakes, sells affordable artisanal cakes baked by Joanna in her home kitchen.
Joanna developed a passion for baking during her younger days. She used to bake often for friends and family and decided to transform her hobby into a career after receiving several compliments on her elegant cakes.
Along with her boyfriend, Darien, Joanna started up Addictive Bakes and their business has grown rapidly since its establishment in late January this year. Darien helps Joanna with the daily operations of the business, in hopes of gaining sufficient experiece to start his own business. The couple mainly receive orders from their Instagram page, which showcases captivating snaps of their cakes.
When asked why they chose to start their business on Instagram, this is what Joanna had to say: “In this day and age, everything is online and it is easier to market your products online and you can reach a wider net of people with e-commerce.”
Another benefit of an online business is the ability to gain recognition quickly. Joanna mentioned that promoting your business online is much easier, especially with the existence of hashtags.
Money making aside, Joanna enjoys fulfilling her client’s orders. She doesn’t see it as a chore since baking is her passion.
Joanna bakes each of her cakes with great love and they are decorated with the highest level of precision.
One of Addictive Bakes’ popular cakes, ‘Chocolate Salted Caramel Cupcakes’ is a fluffy and light confection and the icing on the cupcake has a consistent texture.
Joanna’s decision of pursuing her passion is truly inspiring. When asked about turning her passion into a career, Joanna said: “You cannot just wait around for things to happen. You cannot stop at hoping and dreaming. You have to push yourself to start, even if it’s as simple as trying a different baking technique or setting up a profile for your business.”
