Place As Old As Time

Place As Old As Time

Let’s take a trip around the island and rediscover some of the oldest places in Singapore.

Singapore has come a long way since its independence in 1965. In this fast-developing country, it is getting harder, but not impossible, to find traces of the past. You might be surprised to know that some of these surviving places are older than Singapore.

Here are four places that have withstood the test of time.

TONG HENG DELICACIES (1930s)

Tong Heng Delicacies was established in the 1930s selling traditional handmade Cantonese pastries. The shop, initially located at Smith Street, moved to the heart of Chinatown in the 1970s. Their bestselling egg tarts are savoury and worth queueing up for.

After revamping their brand, many millennials started taking interest due to an increase in media coverage and social media marketing. Tong Heng also opened a second outlet in Jurong Point. You can place your order online and opt for self-pickup or delivery to skip the long queue.

THE FULLERTON HOTEL SINGAPORE (1928)

Amongst the busy district towered with skyscrapers, the Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s outstanding architecture glows even more at night. Named after Robert Fullerton, the building once served as the General Post Office during colonial times.

It has been through many challenges and restorations over the years to retain its beautiful structure. In present times, the building is a five-star luxury hotel and a national monument overlooking Marina Bay.

SINGAPORE ZAM ZAM RESTAURANT (1908)

Started in 1908, Singapore Zam Zam Restaurant is one of the oldest hawker stall in Singapore. For over a century, the Indian-Muslim stall located at Kampong Glam is famous for its Nasi biryani and Murtabak. Attracting many tourists and locals alike, the two-story shop provides a sense of comfort and nostalgia. It is open for business every day from 7 am to 11 pm.

THE ARTS HOUSE (1827)

The Old Parliament House is the oldest surviving government building in Singapore. Built in 1827 as a private residence for a Scottish merchant, there was a dispute over the land and house. The then colonial government resolved it by buying over the house in an auction.

The building was first used as a courthouse and subsequently, a storehouse during World War II. Then, in 2004, it was transformed into an art and heritage centre, showcasing art exhibitions and music performances.
