Recently, picnics have become a really hot trend, perhaps even owing to the pandemic. Some people get really creative with their picnic ideas by bringing their own decorations, making DIY crafts, and organising games to play.

We wanted to try a hand in it ourselves, at SBM’s grassy patch on level 4. To spice it up, we split ourselves in two teams and themed it to Halloween!

Surrounding the theme, we prepared a spooky feast. No tricks, just treats! The challenge was entirely judged based on looks, creativity and budget spent. All of it had to be set up within 30 minutes.

Introducing the two teams: Wicked Witches versus Ghostly Gals!

Wicked Witches

Dressing up as witches, Aida and Xynthea had a witch-inspired theme in mind. They decorated their picnic mat with many Halloween decorations such as crystals and mini jack-o-lanterns. They also prepared a charcuterie board full of treats that fits their theme. The matcha KitKat bars and red M&Ms potrayed zombie fingers. Paired with their ghostly mashmallows, they included mini peeled oranges to look like pumpkins.

Next, they created mocktails with strawberry lime and guava juice, topped off with lemon slices. Finally, their main dish was fusion udon to mimic maggots — made up of udon noodles, mozzarella cheese, and roasted sesame sauce, specially prepared by Aida!

Even though they exceeded their budget, they succeeded in bringing their witch themed picnic to life!

Ghostly Gals

Amandy and I chose the colours white, black, and red to stick with a ghost theme.

Starting off Amandy and I used a black spider web tablecloth as our picnic mat. Next, we got ourselves other complementary decorations for our picnic mat such as mini plants with googly eyes and snacks such as Pocky sticks. For our main dish, we made sliders with mini burger buns, ham, and lettuce. As for our drinks, we had strawberry juice topped with mint leaves.

We also bought Halloween-themed doughnuts and fried seaweed chicken. To make it more exciting, we brought a classic game of Connect-4 to play for two. Finally, we dressed up in our ghost costumes with sunglasses on, adding more style to it.

In the end, our picnic was budget-friendly as we spent less than $40 in total and managed to execute it with ease.

Final Thoughts

Overall, everyone has their own style of their picnic. Despite having a common theme, we managed to cook up various goodies altogether. I definitely recommend others to try it out too! Ask your friends to come up with their own take of a picnic and let their creativity shine. It is such an easy and feasible challenge you can do to spice up your picnic and make it a delightful one for all.
