Story and Photos by Clement Tan

During lunchtime, as I sat in the office craving for Bak Chor Mee, I found myself observing the print team hard at work, realising how all their personalities are unique and fascinating. Since I had spare time, I decided to analyse the team and match their personalities to local Singaporean cuisine, which is also known for having bold and diverse influences, ranging from Chinese, Malay, Indian, and even European. Let’s dig in!

En Wei

is like Durian — both savoury and sweet. She is a lively ball of energy who is sweet on the inside, but prickly on the outside. It was surprising when she told me that her favourite game is the first-person shooter game, Overwatch, and that hip-hop is her favourite music genre. She might really be the coolest person I know in the Print team.

Yan Ling

is quiet and introverted. Like an ice cube, it takes time for her shyness to melt away. However, once she gets excited, she can get very loud and chatty. She is also spontaneous when making plans with her friends, likes watching rom-coms, and is a hopeless romantic. Much like Ice Kachang, she gets more vibrant and flavourful as the top layers of ice melt away.

Ivor

is like Kaya Toast, a classic Singaporean breakfast! Just like the toast, he is an old soul with a retro taste in music from the 80’s and 90’s, ranging from The Beatles to TLC. He is also a photography enthusiast with his classic film camera during his free time! Just like Kaya Toast, everybody’s go-to, you can rely on Ivor to give you constructive feedback.

Esther

is evil with a side of potatoes and pineapples, even describing herself as a stone who likes tripping people and seeing them fall. With her favourite movie genres being psychological films like Black Mirror and Squid Game, I instantly thought of Satay with Pineapple Sauce. I always struggle within myself while eating Satay as I fear stabbing myself with the stick accidentally. But just like the Pineapple Satay sauce that accompanies the Satay, she is a cheerful and chatty individual. Esther really is the epitome of “being yourself”.

Chin Wen

is like Fried Bee Hoon, a Singaporean stay-home comfort food. Why that particular food? She is a very introverted person who loves staying home to binge watch her favourite K-dramas while crocheting. I would say she is a peaceful person with her favourite artists being SZA and Frank Ocean. Also, while getting to know her, she described herself as Flash, the sloth from Zootopia as she is a laid back person living a fast lifestyle.

Beatrice

is how Prata is supper to most people, she is everyone’s favourite. She is extroverted, outgoing, loves making people laugh and bringing joy into everyone’s lives with her sociable personality. You might think that you know her on the surface like the crispy exterior of Prata, but she is actually soft on the inside, volatile and emotional. If you enjoy crying yourself to sleep listening to emotional songs, you can definitely relate to Beatrice!

Clement

(Back to me), I am an avid coffee lover who is loud and dramatic all the time (in the words of the print team). Just like Coffee Pork Ribs, bursting with multiple flavours in a single dish, I am adventurous and experimental and just cannot sit at home. Bitter and sweet, I love time alone yet cherish time spent with my friends. Truly a satisfying dish perfect for those who seek a fine balance between sweet and savoury flavours, while also enjoying experimenting with unique flavours.
