Cinematic Journeys of Discovery

It is undeniable that every film conveys a meaningful message. The journey of a film lies in the pursuit of a protagonist acquiring wisdom, overcoming challenges with an ultimate resolution in the end. Some films are taken much more literally.  I enjoy movies that guide characters along a transformative path to rediscover their selves — embracing change, healing, and exploration.

Aftersun

20 years after her previous retreat to a vacation resort, Sophie reminisces about the fleeting moments shared with her affectionate yet idealistic father, Calum. As an 11-year-old, Sophie begins to perceive  the world through the lens of adolescence, while Calum grapples with the challenges beyond his role as a father.

Sophie’s journey in reconciling the image of her dad with the man she never fully understood feels familiar, as I navigate similar complexities in my real-life relationship with my dad.

The Greatest Showman

Demonstrating exceptional skills in publicity and promotions from a young age, P.T. Barnum sold lottery tickets at the tender age of twelve. Despite attempting various occupations, he leveraged his imaginative limitations to elevate his business, ultimately establishing the Barnum & Bailey circus. The movie illustrates the remarkable journey from humble beginnings to a global sensation, featuring exotic performers and extraordinary acrobatic stunts that defies what seems conventional.

As a performer myself, this movie really hits home for me. I believe it helps people appreciate art in a way that truly connects with them.

Moana

Embarking on a bold quest to rescue her people, the adventurous teenager Moana encounters the formidable demigod Maui, who transforms into her mentor on the path to becoming a skilled way-finder. Navigating treacherous waters teeming with boundless monsters and challenges, they travel the vast ocean together.

Similar to Moana, I see parallels in my own life where I find my true identity after going through a series of challenges.

Shrek

In a distant swamp, there resides an ogre named Shrek, leading a tranquil life until the villainous Lord Farquaad disturbs the peace by banishing a group of fairytale creatures to Shrek’s swamp. To reclaim his serenity, Shrek strikes a deal with Farquaad, embarking on a mission to rescue Princess Fiona, accompanied by the talkative donkey, Donkey. The odyssey is filled with unforeseen turns, with Shrek and Fiona developing an atypical connection.

In our everyday lives, we are all figuring out how to accept ourselves, and I like how this film emphasises the importance of self-acceptance and friendship.

Dead Poets Society

John Keating , a recently appointed English instructor, arrives at a prestigious all-male school renowned for its long-standing traditions and high standards. Employing unconventional teaching approaches, Mr. Keating encourages his students to engage in independent thinking, diverging from the school’s established norms. The narrative revolves around the theme of self-discovery.

Just like Mr. Keating, who guides characters like Neil Perry and Todd Anderson, I too find inspiration in navigating my own daily pressures while embracing change.
