Half-conscious You

“Breathe…1…2…3. Now, what do you see?” This is something you might hear during a hypnotherapy procedure. What exactly is hypnotherapy work and how does it play a part in healing and improving oneself?

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis originated from the Greek word ‘hypnos’, which translates to ‘sleep’. It is often known as a special psychological state where someone enters their sub-consciousness with heightened focus and concentration. This is commonly done with the help of a therapist using verbal repetition and mental images.

However, according to research done by Stanford University School of Medicine, it is said that not everyone can be hypnotised. Every brain functions differently – weaker ones are more likely to be hypnotised, whereas stronger ones are able to control themselves from entering their sub-consciousness.

Why Undergo Hypnotherapy?

People often describe the hypnotherapy experience as a calm and relaxing one. During the procedure, the hypnotist or hypnotherapist will guide them into a trance-like state which increases their concentration and focus levels. This makes them more receptive to requests and advice that they may not normally agree to. Hypnosis can also be used as a treatment for people with anxiety, depression, pain or any unwanted behaviours such as overeating and smoking.

What Are The Risks?

Some side effects of the treatment include anxiety, headaches, dizziness, drowsiness and creation of false memories. The treatment could also be a danger to those who suffer from hallucinations, delusions, drug and alcohol misuse, and Schizophrenia where they have trouble differentiating illusions from reality. Hypnosis is usually deemed as a safe option for therapy, but it is best for people with debilitating mental or physical illnesses to avoid using it.

How To Prepare?

If you are planning to try out hypnotherapy, here are some tips on how you can prepare yourself for the session.

  1. Get a certified hypnotist or hypnotherapist and learn about them through reviews before getting into the procedure performed by them.

  2. If there are family or friends around you that have done the treatment before, do seek recommendations from them.

  3. Be certain of what you are treating for and be well-rested the day before so that you are less inclined to fall asleep during the session.
